Artists Application

The 2019 Palatka Chalk Explosion is free and open to the public, features 5 professional chalk artists, live bands throughout the day, a free street chalking competition with prize money, and provides chalk for kids and adults to create wonderful street art on the walks and street on the beautiful Palatka Riverfront down Memorial Drive. The Arts Council of Greater Palatka’s 6th annual Chalk Explosion will be held Saturday, April 20, 2019 on the beautiful banks of the St. Johns River. Competition artists check in from 8AM to 10AM. at the Palatka River Front Park on Memorial Drive. Artwork will be judged and awarded cash prizes at 5:00 P.M.

Visiting artist are encouraged to spend the weekend and enjoy Putnam’s trails, waterways, and many ‘fishing holes’. Visit the new shops and eateries Downtown Palatka as well as visit the murals all right down the street. The competition is FREE to enter and chalk pastels are provided. There will be cash prizes in three categories, Child-Ages 8-12, Youth-Ages 13-17 and Adult-Ages 18 and up. No prior experience in art is required to enter and the Arts Council is currently accepting pre-registration on a first come, first serve basis. The size of your piece will be 4’x4’ on the sidewalk. Chalk will be provided to anybody of any age who would like to participate non-competitively. The Palatka Chalk Explosion is a member of the Florida Chalk Artists Association Event Chairs, Denise Aiken and Kala Davis, Rebecca Tyler and John Skidmore encourage non-artist, beginners, and youth to also enter the competition. Vibrant chalk pastels will be provided to contestants to express themselves in their own unique way. Compositions must be non-political in nature, family friendly, and not negatively attack any group.

A major highlight of the event is five featured street painters who will create masterpieces throughout the day as visitors watch the works come to life and enjoy the live music. Those artists are Nancy Naulty, Tim Ritter, Janet Tombros (President of the Florida Chalk Assoc.) Beth Shistle, and Chad Wallace. We are so pleased to have them in Palatka for this event. Their works of art are fantastic. Come join us in making the riverfront come alive with public art.
The Theme is open but if you wish to make it an Easter/Spring theme go ahead and get creative. Please read the rules on the Application below.

The Acoustic Circle Music

“Lee Kelly has been singing and performing for over 50 years and he presents music of different genres and has recorded two CDs:  “Jug of Punch” and “Children Songs for All Ages.”

Brett Cammack has a rich repertoire from some of the finest songwriters from Texas, California, and Tennessee.

Chuck Hardwicke is a singer songwriter with a special knack for visualizations, h is storytelling is about Florida natural areas, and Florida Cracker tales.

ONE EYED CAT is a musical duo of Gil and Nora Gauck with shared vocalizations of original music and classic hits.

Snow Day, Amy Webster, and Al DeLuca have been playing music together for 3 years in north central Florida. Popular songs ranging from the 60s to today.

“Sweet William”, Billy Ennis is a singer/song writer who has lived in Palatka for over three decades His acoustic finger pick style weaves through stories of his life.
