Special Gallery Event
Art in the Air Banner Auction
 Judi Cain
Friday, July 22nd 5:30-8:30
Veiwing begins July 8th

The month of July will bring what you’ve all been waiting for! Yes, Independence Day starts off the month, with the activities we all enjoy, but still to come at the Arts Council of Greater Palatka’s Larimer Art Center is a chance to own one of the beautiful Arts in the Air Banners created by our own local artists. In lieu of a traditional Gallery exhibit and reception we are partnering with Palatka Main Street, Inc. to display these locally painted 2-sided works of art.  Banners will be on display for viewing beginning July 8, 2016 through July 22nd, culminating in a live auction celebration. The auction festivities will begin at 5:30 pm on Friday, July 22nd with refreshments and drinks and run until 8:30 pm. The proceeds from the auction benefit the ‘Palatka Art in Public Places’ fund. The highest bidder will go home with a new art treasure for their home, plus make a contribution to the beautification of our town.  Larimer Arts Center is located at 216 Reid St., Palatka.

Why support Art in Public Places, you may ask? In an article in ‘Americans for the Arts’, by Jack Becker, the author states “Imagine, if you can, a world devoid of public art: no Statue of Liberty, no Eiffel Tower, no Vietnam Veterans Memorial, no Tribute in Light. No murals, memorials, or monuments. What would life be like without fireworks displays, puppet parades, sculpture parks, and visionary roadside folk art? These landmarks and special events enhance our experience of a place and our quality of life. They engender a sense of pride and community identity. They reach audiences outside museums, galleries, and theaters, and they add to the beauty of everyday life. They declare the worth of a place and a time in our shared culture.” Studies have shown that monuments, murals, sculptures and Installation art will draw visitors and help create a sense of community in a town.

“We are excited to participate in this much anticipated exhibition and sale.” says Evelyn Snyder, Gallery Chairman for the Arts Council, “a local craftsman and friend of the gallery is making display hangers for us, so patrons can view both sides of the banners easily”. Rumor has it there may also be something else up for bid as well as banners, you have to come to the event on the 22nd to find out what!

Please join us on Friday July 22nd, from 5:30 to 8:30 for a fun evening, and make a contribution to Palatka. For those who cannot attend, absentee bid ballots will be available.
