Brushes are highly dependent on preference. Demonstrations will be given with soft flat synthetic brushes. Soft brushes tend to give a smoother and more blended look, while bristle brushes give better coverage and a “strokey” look. Having a mixture of soft and bristle brushes of a range of sizes is optimal. For this class, soft flat brushes incremented from large to tiny (4 or 5) would be best, but if you already have a preference for other brushes, that is fine.
A small stretched primed canvas with no side over 20” is best. 11”x14” is a good size to start with. A gesso primed hardboard/masonite panel will work too, however the paint does not adhere as quickly as the canvas.
The OMS from the hardware store works fine if you are painting by yourself, but in a classroom setting, the artist grade OMS is more appropriate because the fumes are weaker.
Please bring several copies of a reference photo for your portrait. Don't forget you can purchase art supplies local in down town Palatka at The Art Shoppe and Gallery on 225 St. Johns Ave. |
